How to Get Musty Smell Out of a Closet and Clothes

A musty smell in closet air almost always points to one thing: moisture is sitting somewhere it shouldn't, and mildew is feeding on it. The smell isn't the real problem. It's the warning light. Spray some air freshener and you'll cover it for an afternoon, then it's right back, because the spores are still alive in the drywall, the carpet pad, or the back of a wool coat. First, find where the moisture is coming from

A closet goes musty because air can't move and humidity climbs. Before you clean a single surface, find the source, or you're just resetting the clock. This is the step people skip, and it's the one that decides whether the smell stays gone.

Go through these one at a time, slowly:

• Feel the back wall with your bare hand. If it's cooler or damp compared to the side walls, you may have a cold exterior wall sweating, or a slow leak behind it. That's the spot people miss most often.
• Check the floor and baseboards for past water: buckled trim, a faint tide line, or carpet that's stiff or crunchy in one spot.
• Pull everything out and smell the clothes individually. Sometimes the closet is fine and a few garments are the whole problem. Often it's both.
• Look for visible growth, the black, gray, or greenish spotting that shows up first in ceiling corners, on leather, and on shoe soles where the air is deadest.

Cleaning the closet itself

Once it's empty, work in this order. Skip steps and the smell tends to come back within a week or two.

1. Wipe every hard surface. Clean the walls, shelving, and rods with a solution of one cup white vinegar to a gallon of warm water. Vinegar cuts surface mildew and the musty film without leaving its own perfume the way bleach does.
2. Dry it completely. This matters more than the scrubbing. Run a fan or a small dehumidifier in there for a full day, and leave a tub of moisture absorber or a bowl of baking soda on the shelf to pull the last of the dampness.

If the carpet inside the closet smells, that's a common hiding spot. The pad underneath holds moisture and mildew for years, and a surface cleaning won't touch it.

Getting musty smell out of clothes for good

Musty smell on clothes is a separate fight. The odor compounds bind into the fibers, and one normal wash usually won't pull them out.

1. Wash with vinegar first. Add one cup of white vinegar to the drum, no detergent, and run a hot cycle. Check the care tag first so you don't shrink anything.
2. Wash again with detergent. Run a second normal wash with detergent. For stubborn pieces, a half cup of baking soda in that wash helps.
3. Dry it bone-dry. Dry everything all the way through, outside in the sun and breeze if you can. The point is getting the fabric completely dry and aired out so there's no moisture left for mildew to use.

Don't put dry-clean-only items, wool coats, suits, and leather, into water. Take them to a cleaner and tell them straight up it's mildew, so they treat it instead of just pressing it back in.

How to keep the musty smell in closet air from coming back

Fixing it once is the easy part. Keeping it fixed comes down to airflow and humidity, every day, quietly in the background.

• Leave the door cracked or swap in a louvered door so air actually circulates.
• Keep a moisture absorber or a small rechargeable dehumidifier on the shelf, especially in basements, ground floors, and older buildings.
• Don't pack clothes wall-to-wall. Air has to move between them, and a stuffed rod traps humidity against the back wall.
• Never store anything damp, and let worn clothes air out for a few hours before they go back in.
